Absoils project at international events in 2013
Absoils project was presented at the Simm-ccities conference (www.simmccities.com) and workshop (Sustainable and Innovative Material Management for the Construction in Cities) in Stockholm on the 25-26th of April. The event was devoted to reuse of construction and demolition waste and industrial by-products mainly for civil engineering purposes. The conference gathered several participants from 8 countries in the Baltic Sea region and the EU.
The three main findings on the topic of recycling and reuse of waste can be summed up as:
-
EU regulations, energy and climate change prevention goals constitute the drivers for an emerging market
-
Joint applications in order to unlock investments are the key to success
-
Successful implementation requires efficient knowledge and experience exchange
One of the key results of the conference was also a decision to develop larger development projects as EU-funding is released in the upcoming years.
The regional material service system developed in the framework of the Absoils project was presented during a session devoted to spatial planning and supporting planning tools.

Absoils project at three international conferences in 2012
In 2012 the project was presented by RAMFI at three international events. The events were:
31st of May – 2nd of June - 12th Baltic Sea Geotechnical Conference 2012 in Rostock (Germany). The aim of the conference was to provide a forum for an intensive transfer of ideas and experiences with engineering and research groups. The event focused on the Baltic Sea area with regard to sustainable infrastructure development.

30th of May – 1st of June 2012 - WASCON - 8th International Conference on the Environmental and Technical Implications of Construction with Alternative Materials in Gothenburg (Sweden). WASCON 2012 was hosted by the Swedish Geotechnical Institute. The conference attracted 159 participants from 24 countries. The conference presentations stressed that increased recycling of alternative materials and waste products is necessary for a sustainable society but the alternative materials must have sufficiently high technical performance and be acceptable from an environmental risk management perspective.

Absoils project at various networking events in Finland
In 2012 the Absoils project was also presented at the following networking events in Finland:
Energy Industry Days in Helsinki (18.1.2012)
Constructors’ Days in Hämeenlinna (19.1.2012)
Surplus soil masses workshop in Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa (23.3.2102)
Forest Industry seminar in Helsinki (25.4.2012)
European meeting of the Ash Producers in Helsinki (29.6..2012)
Forest Research Seminar in Lepää (17.8.2012)
Absoils at YGFORUM seminar in Helsinki 9.10.2012
Two presentations on the Absoils project were also delivered at the YGOFORUM seminar in 2012. The event gathered about 80 participants. One of the presentations gave an overview of the project development and the pilot sites.

The other presentation concentrated on the Modelling Action and the development of the Regional Material Service System (RMSS). The RMSS consists of two main components – mapping functionalities and database. The mapping part works on the Autodesk MapGuide software and database structure have been carried out with MySQL. There is a seamless link between those two programs. The mapping part works as a user interface and the database management requires an administrator. Once the RMSS system has been set up properly, it is expected that the database works by itself and it needs only little management by the administrator. There can be numerous users for the RMSS system and the functions can be used by many users simultaneously.

Absoils project in the regional TV news
In December 2011, the project director and one of the partners (Biomaa) were interviewed in connection to the Absoils project and the utilisation of the abandoned soils in the capital region of Helsinki. The interview was broadcasted during the regional evening news on the 20th of December, 2011 (7 pm. Channel 2).
Absoils project presented to the stakeholders in the Baltic Sea region in Stockholm
The Absoils project was presented during the Baltic Inert Material Management Symposium in Stockholm held on the 21st and the 22nd of November 2011. One of the aims of the event was to create a platform for the public and private sector stakeholders to share and create toward improving the area of (non-metal) inert construction material management, i.e. natural stone, recycled concrete or soils. The objectives included creating new networks, better understanding and working practices, and a more sustainable material flow.

ABSOILS project offers a solution to the redundant soils challenge faced by the city of Helsinki. MASS seminar (2.11.2011)
The seminar was organised by a working group of the city of Helsinki that aims to coordinate the utilisation of the excavated masses in various construction projects instead of landfilling them. The city of Helsinki annually generates about 0,6 million m3 of excavated soils. The poor quality soils that are traditionally landfilled constitute about 70% of this amount. From the beginning of 2011, the Pitkäsuo landfill in Vantaa has proclaimed a ban on receiving the redundant soils from the city of Helsinki. Transportation of huge masses to distant locations poses both an economic and environmental challenge. The activities of the ABSOILS project offer a feasible solution to this problem.
