NOTICE 16.6.2003
IMPLEMENTATION OF PILOTS IN
THE SUMMER 2003
The LIFE-project
pilots of summer 2003 include different types of light traffic
paths at the sides of the local road passing the village of Luopioinen, renovation of a badly damaged road, and
construction of a short section for groundwater protection at
Pihtisalmentie in Luopioinen.
The LIFE-project is
focusing particularly on the logistics (delivery of the
different types of by-product materials and their storage),
equipment and work methods, and on the long-term durability,
environmental and economic impact of pilots. The results from
the pilots as well as other available knowledge and know-how
will be the basis for the assessment of the environmental and
economic benefits of the new alternatives, and for the
comparison of the new alternatives with conventional
solutions.
The LIFE-pilots will
involve industrial by-products like fibreclay (i.e. deinking
sludge of the Georgia Pacific Finland Ltd mill in Nokia),
bark/peat fly ash (from the UPM-Kymmene Ltd mill in
Jämsänkoski) and filtercake (from Kemira Chemicals Ltd in
Kokkola, production of calcium chloride). Fibreclay and fly
ash will be mixed into a mixture we call fibre-ash, and this
will be used for the structural courses of the light traffic
path and the road to be renovated. The groundwater protection
will be based on the sealing properties of the fibreclay. The
light traffic paths and the renovated road section will be
covered with a mixture of crushed stone with filtercake;
earlier laboratory tests indicate, that filtercake will give
a longer term protection against dusting of a ‘gravel road’
than the conventional liquid salt.
The pilots will be
implemented according to the following time schedule:
1.
16.6.2003 has started the construction of the light
traffic paths, and this will be finished around mid August,
before the schools start again.
2.
The renovation of the road sections and construction of
the groundwater protection structure at Pihtisalmentie will
start at the beginning of August and be finished within 2
weeks from the start.
The LIFE-pilot sites
are given in the map below. KC-Pilot-2003 indicates at the
parts to be implemented during summer 2003, and KC-Pilot-2002
indicates at the pilots of previous summer. Environmental and
geotechnical follow-up tests will be performed at the
Pilot-2002 during the period of summer-autumn 2003.
