ABSOILS

Arcada 2, Kyläsaari, Helsinki

The Arcada 2 area is built on sea by filling. The clay reaches to -15…-25 level from the surface of the sea. The fillings are made mainly from aggregate material which is floating on top of the clay. The original filling was made during 1960's and the thickness of the filling is over 20 meters at largest. The other fillings of the area (2…5 m) are made mainly on top of gyttja and clay layers which have intensely compacted.

The thickness of the fillings above the clay layers varies a lot which causes horizontal load and lateral expansion. To decrease the load and lateral expansion the load of the thick fillings is decreased by exchanging the heavy fillings with light weight soil up to level-5. The light weight soil is stabilised abandoned clay. Also areas where contaminated soil is removed are filled with stabilised clay. On Kyläsaarenkuja a pile plate is constructed which prevents the formation of lateral expansion. The stabilised clay decreases the load on the soils below and decreases the horizontal load which also decreases the load on the piling.

Restrictions concerning the highest density of the clay have been set which has made it challenging to find suitable clay for the site. To fulfil the requirements for the clay a pre-treatment method has been developed to decrease the density of the clay. The stabilisation is carried out in separate stages. The Arcada 2 pilot site provides information and experience both for the needs of the ABSOILS project and for similar light weight stabilisation applications. The abandoned clay materials are brought form construction sites where the utilisation is not possible.
